Les Allen left the managerial post at QPR in the year 1970, despite taking the club to the quarter finals of the FA cup. Gordon Jago took charge of Rangers in 1971, guiding the club to a much improved fourth position finish in the second division at the end of the 1971 – 1972 season. The following year saw Jago take Rangers in to the first division as they finished off the campaign off in second position, resulting in automatic promotion back in to the first division.
Rangers enjoyed a fine campaign during the 1973 – 1974 season, finishing it off in a very impressive eighth position finish and reaching the quarter finals of the FA cup only suffering defeat against Leicester City in the last eight.
Dave Sexton took charge of Rangers in 1974 and went on to spend three years in charge at the football club. He nearly guided Rangers to a huge triumph in the league as they narrowly missed out on winning the league title as they finished off the 1975 – 1976 campaign in a very strong second position. He took Rangers to the semi finals of the league cup in 1977; however they suffered defeat against Aston Villa to miss out on a birth in the final of the cup competition. Don Givens was the star player for Rangers during this time period and helped Rangers finish off in second position.
The late 1970’s saw various managers take charge at the club, including, Frank Sibley, Steve Burtenshaw and Tommy Docherty. Queens Park rangers suffered relegation in to the second division at the end of the 1978 – 1979 season finishing the campaign off in 20th position.
