Ray Wilkins took charge at the club as player manager during the early 1990’s and Rangers certainly did not struggle. In what was the first ‘premiership’ season, the 1992 – 1993 campaign saw Queens Park Rangers play in style as they finished of the season in fifth position, narrowly missing out on a birth in the UEFA cup. Les Ferdinand was their star player during the early 1990’s as he was prolific in front of goal and at that time was playing up front for England in the qualification matches for the 1994 world cup finals. Andy Sinton left Rangers in the summer of 1993 for Sheffield Wednesday, however QPR were certainly a force in the top flight throughout the early 1990’s. Arguably one of their finest results in their football history came when they traveled to Old Trafford to meet up with Manchester United; a side at the time was clear at the top of the table, on New Year’s Day of 1992. Rangers demolished United in Manchester as they cruised to an easy 4-1 win over the reds. They were unfortunate in the league cup during the 1993 – 1994 season as they crashed out in the fourth round of the competition, suffering a narrow defeat against Sheffield Wednesday in match they played really well in. Gerry Francis guided QPR to a ninth position finish in the premier league at the end of the 1993 – 1994 season.
